Automated Benchmarking of Description Logic Reasoners

چکیده
Reasoning for expressive DLs implemented in state-of-the-art systems has high worst case complexity. The hope/claim is, however, that these systems perform well in “realistic” applications. In practice, this means in ontology applications. To check the validity of this claim it is necessary to test the performance of these systems with (the widest possible range of) ontologies derived from applications. In addition, testing is useful in order to check the correctness of implementations. In small examples, it may be easy to check the correctness of a system’s reasoning. However, for typical real-world examples, manual checking is not feasible. In these instances, the best (perhaps the only) way to check correctness is often by checking for consistency with the reasoning of other existing systems. Real-world ontologies vary considerably in their size and expressivity. While they are all valuable test cases, it is still important to understand each ontology’s properties in order to provide efficient and relevant testing. System developers find this particularly useful, as it helps them to identify weaknesses in their systems and to devise and test new optimisations. Finally, testing is also useful for the developers and users of applications as they can use benchmarking results to determine if (the performance of) a DL reasoner is likely to satisfy their requirements, and if so which reasoner is likely to perform best in their application.

Confirming the QSR Promise
Within the qualitative spatial reasoning community it has been a widely accepted commonplace that reasoning in qualitative constraint calculi outperforms reasoning in other more general and expressive formalisms. To check the correctness of this assumption we conducted some empirical case studies in which we compared the performance of a qualitative constraint solver with different automated re...
متن کاملWSML Deliverable D 16 . 2 v 0 . 2 WSML Reasoner Survey
This deliverable provides a survey of different reasoner implementations and discusses their applicability as reasoners with ontologies written in either of the five WSML variants. At first, the requirements each of the WSML variants have on a reasoner are described. Afterwards, we survey interesting and promising reasoner implementations with regard to their applicability on ontologies written...
متن کاملExplaining Description Logic Reasoning
The increasing reliance on automated reasoning needs not just the availability of fast reasoners, but also mechanisms to explain their, often surprising, results to human users, so that they can understand the consequences in their application domain. As one of the significant applications of machine reasoning is the Semantic Web, where reasoning on Description Logic(DL) plays a critical role, ...
متن کاملFramework for an Automated Comparison of Description Logic Reasoners
OWL is an ontology language developed by the W3C, and although initially developed for the Semantic Web, OWL has rapidly become a de facto standard for ontology development in general. The design of OWL was heavily influenced by research in description logics, and the specification includes a formal semantics. One of the goals of this formal approach was to provide interoperability: different O...
متن کاملOptimization and Evaluation of Reasoning in Probabilistic Description Logic: Towards a Systematic Approach
This paper describes the first steps towards developing a methodology for testing and evaluating the performance of reasoners for the probabilistic description logic P-SHIQ(D). Since it is a new formalism for handling uncertainty in DL ontologies, no such methodology has been proposed. There are no sufficiently large probabilistic ontologies to be used as test suites. In addition, since the rea...
